David and Goliath - Story of Shepherd Boy
The holy
Bible is divided into two parts- New Testament and Old Testament. This story is
taken from the Old Testament of the Bible.
Once, there
was a boy who was youngest of the seven brothers. He was a shepherd- boy. Just
like other days, he went out on the green hills, dotted with tiny, yellow
flowers minding his flock of sheep. He kept a careful eye on the sheep. They
must not wander off. No ravenous wild animal must hurt or kill them.
David was
good at his work. The sheep knew that they were safe when he was with them.
David led them to the spots where the grass was fresh and juicy. He found there
streams of fresh and clear water so that they could quench their thirst.
He was
trying to compose a new song on his Harp (A musical instrument). It was such a
beautiful movement composing new song to God thanking and praising him for
everything. He loved God very much. David had just composed the first few lines
of a song when he saw one of his brothers running up the hill.
David’s
brother – Come home immediately, David, Samuel wants to see you.
God was not
pleased with Saul, the ruler of the land. So, He had send Samuel, the prophet,
to David’s house to choose the future king. The next king must be someone who
loved and trusted God and the lord had chosen David. When he came home, Samuel
blessed him and gave him holy oil on his forehead. His family came to know that
David was very special who had chosen by the God.
Time
passed, King Saul would not keep well. When he became very ill, his servants
brought David to play harp for him in order to propitiate him because God loved
David and he was the best friend of Jonathan, king’s son. Now enemies of that
land gathered their armies for a battle against King Saul. The enemy had huge
army of soldiers. In his army, there was a champion named Goliath who was
approx. nine feet tall. He was known as Goliath the Giant. He was like an iron
man, wore a heavy coat of armor and a bronze helmet. His spear was long, heavy
and very sharp. His voice boomed all over the valley when he shouted. He
challenged the King Saul to a battle. He said to choose a man if he was able to
fight and kill him. He would be his servant. If not, then kingdom would by
them.
When King
Saul and their people heard this, they were dismayed. The giant screamed and
shouted everyday daring people to fight him and building up fear in them.
Three of
David’s brother in the army of King Saul. One day, David was sent to take some
food for those brothers in the camp by his father. He was just in time to hear
Goliath shouting, “I dare anyone to fight me.” Everyone was afraid of the
Goliath. When on one move, David talked to some soldiers.
David –
That giant too big for his boots! We shouldn’t let him get away with trying to
bully us like this.
His Brother
– You are too big for your boots, David. You are just fourteen. Stay outside of
this, leave us to fight this giant.
King Saul
himself – David Go away!
David – O
king, I will fight Goliath. I am not scared. I keep the sheep for my father and
a lion took a lamb from the flock, I went after him, fought him. God had given
me strength to fight that lion and the same God will help me fighting our enemy.
Please, allow me to fight the Giant.
King Saul –
“Go then, and the Lord be with you.”
The king
clothed him in his armor, put a helmet of bronze on his head gave him sword.
But David was not comfortable with these heavy things. So he took them off and
put on his own clothes. He took his strong stick and went down to the brook. He
chosen five smooth round stones, put them inside the bag and drew near to here
enemy was stayed.
“What is
this?” Goliath roared, when he saw the David. He said, “I am a dog that you
come to me with a stick?”
David – I
come to you in the name of God.
He put his
hand into his bag, took out a stone and put it into his sling and fired it. The
stone flew and hit the Goliath on his forehead and he tumbled down in a shower
of dust with a loud thud. David ran and stood over him, took the giant’s sword
out of its sheath and cut off his head. The Giant was dead.
When the
enemy saw that their champion was killed, they ran away.
Now, King
Saul and his army chased after the enemy. The people of the land blessed David.
They came out of the city to greet and congratulate King and his army. There
was much rejoicing.
Now, David was the Hero.
