A. 3. Explain the following briefly, in your own words. HOTS
Tourists and other Indians need to visit Assam to discover what an amazing part of India it is. The eminent scholar, Hem Barua wrote: 'To many outsiders, Assam is no more than a land of mountains, malaria, earthquakes and floods and the Kamakhya temple. To others it is a green woodland where slothful serpents, insidious tigers, wild elephants and stealthy leopards peep and peer with virulent eyes and claws. Assam to most people is mentally a distant horizon like Bolivia or Peru - less known and more fancied.'
This may be said of the all the Seven Sister States by those who feel it is too long a journey to embark upon, too frightening an area to visit and too much of an adventure to participate in. To remove the fear of distance and the sinister mystery, go to the North East to discover and experience the most magnificent untouched and unmatched beauty that India has to offer.
WRITING
B. Get into seven groups. Each group will design a pamphlet for tourists for one of the Seven Sister States.
Pamphlets: Pamphlets are also called brochures. A pamphlet is usually made of a single sheet of expensive glossy paper that has been folded into four or six panels.
Each of the panels has information about a tourist destination or a particular product for sale. It encourages people to support a special cause or create an interest in a project. It is more expensive and difficult to print as it has photographs and sometimes small maps. It has more details than a flyer or a leaflet. Your teacher will show you samples of pamphlets. Collect some of your own. Get into groups and design a pamphlet that will be useful for tourists who plan to visit the northeastern state you are working on. You will have to do a lot of research before you begin this activity. The above account gives you a very brief sketch of each state. You will have to delve deep into different aspects of the state: location/ weather/vegetation/terrain/places especially interesting for tourists. In addition you will have to give details of flights/hotels/tourist help centres. Include pictures.
This exercise will take time. So each member of the team must have a role: Team Leader, Researchers, Writers, Illustration Provider. Who does what best is something you must decide.
