We use the foms of the verb 'be' – am, is, are as helping verbs along with the 'ing' forms of the verb to for the present continuous tense.

Use the present continuo us tense when talking about:
 
→ actions taking place in the present:

The children are playing cricket on the playground. 
Ms Das Gupta is standing near the blackboard.

→ things that will change:

Mom is staying with Grandma for a few days.
Dad is travelling by metro to work as his car is in the workshop. 

→ definite plans/arrangements that have been made earlier:

We are meeting at the swimming pool tomorrow evening.
They are arriving at six and leaving by six thirty. 

→ we are angry or up set about something:

She is always dropping food on the desk we share!
We are never going to reach there on time!
